Tanzania - When To Go
Great all year round, especially June until October, but watch out for the main rainy season in April and May.
Tanzania has a great climate for most of the year. In terms of weather and game viewing the best time to visit is between June and October. The weather is hot, but not humid, and the game viewing is excellent.
Tanzania is also a great winter sun option; however it can be very humid between January and March. The major rainy season to avoid is in April and May when all of the camps are closed. There is also a shorter rainy season that tends to fall mid November. However properties tend to stay open during these months as there are only a few rain showers.

Set date departures
Over the last 10 years we have been tailor making custom itineraries to East and Southern Africa; however in recent years due to popular demand we have decided to incorporate some set date departure itineraries to Tanzania for clients wishing to share their safari experience with others which often makes an itinerary more affordable

It’s the small moments that make a Tanzanian experience so rich and lively that it forms the sweetest memories. The moment you first saw a baby wildebeest struggle to its feet, the first time you saw the morning mist pouring from the slopes of Kilimanjaro, the second you taste true African cooking beside a flickering fire, the first time you stop in a local village and the children swarm you with eager excitement. The sound of a lion roaring under a slice of moonlight – all these precious moments make Africa. Take a look at our stunning selection of safaris and start planning your big adventure today.

Choosing a Safari Destination
Tanzania is a vast, wild and often unbridled destination. From the rising snowcapped spires of Mount Kilimanjaro to the sheer golden walls of the Great Rift Valley, endless plains of scorched Serengeti and the laid back island life of Zanzibar – there is so much to see and do in Tanzania.  Every corner of Tanzania has something a little different on offer which is why choosing the right safari destination is important for those who are seeking the experience of a lifetime.
Some people prefer to beat the bush as they walk, to squat down and watch a pride of lions yawn in the shade, to sleep beneath the stars and cook simple meals over a flickering fire. Other people prefer the thrill and excitement of racing through the Serengeti in a four wheel drive with the wind in their hair, before returning to relax in the pool and sip a cocktail at their luxury lodge. Whatever side of Tanzania you are searching for, we are confident that we can deliver all your dreams in an instant.

Northern Circuit
The parks and game reserves that make up Tanzania’s northern circuit are easily the most popular and accessible attractions in the country. All the big names of mainstream Tanzanian safaris are located in the north, from the plains of the Serengeti to the lofty peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro. On a northern circuit safari, most safari companies and independent travellers depart from Arusha. Lake Manyara National Park and Tarangire National Park are little more than three hours away and are often incorporated as part of a longer safari. The most visited part of the northern circuit is the Ngorongoro Crater, where wildlife grazes and hunts in one of the largest volcanic craters in the world.
If you are travelling from December to April, the annual wildebeest migration in Serengeti National Park is definitely not to be missed. For hikers, climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro or the crater of Mt. Meru is an adventurous break from game viewing. A longer trek through the Crater Highlands is also a beautiful way to explore northern Tanzania at a leisurely pace. Day-trips from Arusha to Mt. Meru and the Momela Lakes, located in Arusha National Park, incorporate short forest hikes and canoeing trips as a break from standard vehicle game drives.

Northern circuit – Home to the “Big five”

Serengeti national Park ……”the home of wildebeest migration in Africa”
Tanzania’s oldest and most famous national park, best known for the awe inspiring wildebeest migration as well as one of the Natural Wonders of the World.
The Serengeti is vast and beautiful; it's one of Africa's most captivating safari areas. The sheer amount of game here is amazing: estimates suggest up to about two million wildebeest, plus perhaps half a million zebra, hundreds of thousands of Thompson's gazelle, and tens of thousands of impala, Grant's gazelle, topi (tsessebe), hartebeest, eland and other antelope – all hunted by the predators for which these plains are famous.

The great annual wildebeest migration
This annual year around phenomenon, that has been taking place for over two million years, was first recorded by Professor Bernard Grizmek and his son, Michael in the 1930’s. There were less than 300,000 animals at that time. The rinderpest epidemic is believed to have decimated the herds in the herds in the early century. Today the main migratory are 1,300,000 wildebeest and 700,000 others like Thomson’s gazelle, Zebra and Eland.

Wildebeest migration in Serengeti
Southern corridor of Serengeti
The southern Serengeti short grass plains are ‘real’ grasslands that have remained free of bush and woodland encroachment. Formed millions of years ago, by the deposition of vast quantities of ash from volcanoes of the Ngorongoro highlands. It is these alkaline rich of soil, producing sweet short grass rich in minerals which attract the wildebeest back every year from the Maasai Mara. It is a time when all the migrants will give birth, after an eight and half month gestation, nearly 400,000 female wildebeest will drop their calves within the space of two to three weeks. Is the capable area offering an excellent game viewing on a year round basis through access to some of the best wildlife locations the southern and central of Serengeti has to the most breathtaking scenery the Serengeti has to offer.
Surreal rock formations protrude out from the plains and provide cats with a perfect viewpoint to overlook their territories. Also the southern plains is most famous for the period between December to March as the migration heads into this fertile grassland to give birth to the next generation of wildebeest and Zebra. During these months, vast herds of migratory animals descend upon the southern plains – followed intently by range of predators.

Central corridor of Serengeti – at Seronera…..”the heart of Serengeti”
The Seronera valley is well known for its high concentration of resident game and quality game viewing. The Seronera River provides a constant water source and creates a forest region which follows the course of the river creating good cover for the elusive leopard.
Your game drive in central Serengeti offer an excellent variety of habitats and combine migration viewing with the search for big cat as well as rhino at Moru kopje – this is the massive a massive animals in Africa, currently being the only area in the Serengeti where the illustrious animals can be viewed.

Western wooded grassland – long dry season – June - SeptemberWildebeest Migration Safari
The timing of the calving is probably linked to the timing of the mating (rut),at the end of the rains in Many and June. They move off the plains, even when sufficient grazing remains in order that they will all be compressed into the small area, which is necessary to synchronize the rut. The rut appears to coincide with the full moon, suggesting that the mating peak is triggered by the lunar cycle. Most matings happen at night. taking place between full moons. Natural phenomena occur all over the world but few can compete with the annual Masai Mara/Serengeti wildebeest migration. The numbers alone are hard to believe: up to two million animals - wildebeest as well as zebra and gazelles - move clockwise around this enormous ecosystem, driven by ancient instincts to find fresh grazing and water.
It's drama on a truly epic scale: the migrating herds undergo all manner of challenges and hardships as they move from region to region, and are constantly under attack from predators, none more so than from Africa's big cats and the notoriously huge crocodiles that lie in wait at various river crossing points.
You'll need to plan your visit carefully: the wildebeest migration is a fluid, dynamic affair taking place between two countries - Kenya and Tanzania - and subject to the timing of that year's rains. It's also an event of different experiences: depending on where you are and at what time, you may see the wildebeest herds giving birth and courting, moving in great dusty columns, or funnelling across muddy rivers.
There's plenty of well-located accommodation both in the Masai Mara and the Serengeti to enable you to experience the migration, and nearly all scheduled tours and safaris to either country include excursions into the two conservation areas. Click on our where to go for the wildebeest migration feature for information on getting your location right, and then to ensure you're in the right place at the right time by checking our when to go section.
Alternatively, for a faultless wildebeest migration safari, work with one of our African Safari Experts to create a tailor-made itinerary based on your requirements. Their knowledge and experience of the migration means you'll be in safe hands to witness this once-in-a-lifetime event.

Ngorongoro crater
The Ngorongoro Crater, at 2,286m.  Above sea level, is the largest unbroken caldera in the world. Surrounded by very steep walls rising 610 meters from the crater floor, this natural amphitheatre measures 19.2 km in diameter and 304 sq km in area. It is home to up to 30,000 animals, almost half being wildebeest and zebra. Buffalo, elephant, hippo, hyena, jackal, lion, ostrich, serval, warthog, bushbuck, eland, hartebeest, reedbuck, waterbuck and huge herds of both Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelle are easily seen on the crater floor. Thanks to anti-poaching patrols, the crater is now one of the few places in East Africa where visitors can be certain of seeing black rhino, with the number now approaching 25. Leopard may occasionally be seen in the trees of the forest surrounding the crater while cheetah are also present but rarely seen. Large herds of giraffe live on the rim of the crater and will be seen on the drive to Olduvai Gorge and the Serengeti. Countless flamingo form a pink blanket over the soda lakes while more than 100 species of birds not found in the Serengeti have been spotted. The crater, which has been declared a UNESCO   as  a  “World Heritage site”, lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which covers more than 8,300 sq.km. It is bounded by Lake Eyasi in the southwest and the Gol Mountains.

During this time of the year, thousands of animals migrate from dry Maasai steppe to Tarangire River for water. Covering 2,600 sqkm, Tarangire is famous for its large herds of elephants and buffalo. Other popular species seen here are lion, giraffe, Impala, wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle. It is also the only known game sanctuary in Tanzania containing fringe-eared Oryx. Gently rolling countryside, dotted with majestic baobab trees and large herds of Elephant as well as migration of animals during the dry season.

Arusha national park:Just 32km away from the town of Arusha is the Arusha National Park, which was described by Sir Julian Huxley as” a gem amongst parks”. The park consists of three spectacular features, the Momella lakes, Meru Crater, and the Ngurdoto Crater.
On clear days, magnificent views of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru can be seen from almost anywhere in the park. The wildlife is varied. The vegetation ranges from forest to swamp. The park is famous for its 400 species of bird life, both migrant and resident and the black and white colobus monkey.
Other animals frequently seen in the park are  troops of baboons, elephants, giraffes, bufalos, hippos, leopards, hyenas and a wide range of antelope species and because of its close proximity to Arusha, it is an ideal place for a day excursion.

Southern circuit– “The wild unexplored and unexploited”
Ruaha national park:-
Ruaha is also one of the least explored parks in Tanzania and a safari to Ruaha is an exclusive safari experience, where one can view amazing wildlife undisturbed in a vast and pristine wilderness region.
The lifeline for most wildlife in Ruaha National Park is the Ruaha River. During the dry season from June to end of October the river draws in animals from all over the park as it is one of a few sources of permanent water.
The wildlife viewing during this period is as good as you are likely to find at any of the top safari regions in Africa. When one considers the high level of the safari guides in Ruaha as well as exclusive experience that one will enjoy then it’s not difficult to see why this is such an amazing place for a safari.
The Tanzania’s second largest park boosts conspicuous packs of highly endangered African wild dogs. Undulating topography, glorious rivers and majestic trees combine to produce one of the Africa’s most captivating landscapes. Recently expanded to become the largest national park in East Africa and, after Kafue National Park in Zambia, the second largest wildlife protection area in Africa, Ruaha is Tanzania’s biggest elephant sanctuary. Its name derives from the Great Ruaha River which flows along its eastern border, creating spectacular gorges. Flowing into the Rufiji River, the Great Ruaha is home to hippo and crocodile. Various antelope species, such as eland, grant’s gazelle, impala, greater and lesser kudu, reedbuck, waterbuck and the rare sable and roan antelope thrive in the grasslands bordering the river alongside buffalo, giraffe and zebra. Predators include lion, leopard, cheetah, both striped and spotted hyena, and wild dog – or African hunting dog as they should correctly be called. Birdlife is prolific, over 370.

Mikumi national park:
Located north of the Selous Reserve, less than 300 km. from Dar es Salaam, is the Mikumi National Park. Because of its                 accessibility it is one of the most popular parks in Tanzania and is an important center for education where students go to study ecology and conservation. The Mikumi flood plain, with its open grasslands, dominates the park together with the mountain ranges that border the park on two sides. A wide range of wildlife inhabits its 3,230 sq km area. Lion is commonly seen as are packs of wild dog, rare elsewhere in Africa. Elephant may be encountered and other animals frequently observed are buffalo, civet, eland, giraffe, impala, kudu, reedbuck, warthog, waterbuck, wildebeest, zebra and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest. Near the southern boundary of the park       it is possible to see groups of female and young bachelor sable with their one dominant male. Crocodiles, monitor lizard and python are among the park’s many other residents. At the southern end of the flood plain, in the Kikoboga area, families of yellow baboon live while wallowing hippos are frequently joined in their pools by flocks of open-billed storks, hunting for mollusks. Over 400 species of birds have been observed in the park, many of which are Eurasian migrants who stay between October and April.

Udzungwa Mountain national park:
The Udzungwa Mountains National park is part of the Eastern Arc range which stretches from Southern Kenya to Southern Tanzania. Udzungwa is a small national park which encompasses an upland area of particular scientific interest due its diversity which provides a sanctuary for many unique plants, mammals, birds, amphibian, reptiles and insect species. This park offers excellent hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities, a variety of trails are available to suit different hiking trails through the mountainous terrain and pristine forests with overnight  camping and long-range wilderness trails taking several days.
Most visitors stay at campsite or lodge inside the park or a campsite outside the park gate like Mbega campsite or to go on a single day hike to the top of the waterfalls, but it is possible to undertake longer multiple day hikes, camping along the way. Although we do like this little park, we find that in the final analysis it rarely manages to make it into a trip ... but do feel free to ask.

Kitulo national park…” the Garden of God”:- one of the great floral spectacles of the world.
One of the two more recently gazetted national parks, Kitulo is the first park in tropical Africa to be recognized largely for its floristic significance. Known locally as ‘God’s Garden’ or the ‘Serengeti of Flowers’, Kitulo plateau has had over 350 species of plants documented to date. These include 45 species of orchids, many of which are not found anywhere else in the world. Some 31 species are endemic to Tanzania; 26 to the Kitulo region; at least three to the plateau itself; and two are found only on the plateau and in the adjoining forest. The plateau is also home to some important bird species, again many endemic to Tanzania, including the endangered blue swallow, Denham’s bustard, mountain marsh widow, Njombe cisticola, and Kipengere seedeater. Some of the world’s rarest butterflies also inhabit the area along with chameleon, lizard, frogs and a few hardy reedbuck and eland. Getting there: By road from Dares Salaam to Chimala, via Mbeya.

SELOUS GAME RESERVE
At around 50,000 sq km, the Selous is Africa’s largest game reserve, a wilderness area bigger than Denmark or Switzerland. The Reserve covers more than 5% of Tanzania’s total land area, and is three times larger than the Serengeti. Although slightly off the beaten track of the more well-worn safari circuits, a visit to the Selous offers unforgettable game viewing in almost completely isolated surroundings.
Yet Selous boasts Tanzania’s largest population of elephant as well as large numbers of lion, leopard, African hunting dog, buffalo and hippo. The best time to visit is during the dry season, when game is forced from hiding places to the river to drink. The waters of the Kilombero Game Controlled Area are home to the ferocious tiger fish and vandu catfish, the latter equipped with a primitive set of lungs which allows it to migrate from one landlocked pool to another.

Western Tanzania Safari Circuit
Western Tanzania presents a unique opportunity to escape the tourist crowds and enter the heart of the bush. You can see chimpanzees in their natural habitat at Gombe Stream or Mahale Mountains and trek through breathtaking forests. Kitavi is exceptional for hippo and lion.
You can also visit the great lakes: Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika, Lake Nyasa (Malawi) and Lake Rukwa.
Because of the extreme distances involved in visiting West Tanzania most safaris are flying safaris. If you wish to see an example of both a luxury trip and a lodge trip have a look at our sample west itineraries.

The great lakes circuit is often described as the least visited part of Tanzania; but for the adventurous traveller it offers an amazing variety of attractions.

Gombe Stream National Park:
Gombe Stream is the smallest of Tanzania’s National Parks, a thin strip of ancient forest set amidst mountains and steep valleys on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Chimpanzees are Gombe Stream’s main attraction; they are the stars of the world’s most famous chimpanzee community, made famous by the pioneering British researcher Jane Goodall, whose years of constant observation since 1960 have brought to light startling new facts about mankind’s closest cousins.

Katavi National Park:
Katavi National Park in western Tanzania is remote and wild, a destination for the true safari aficionado. The name of the park immortalizes a legendary hunter, Katabi, whose spirit is believed to possess a tamarind tree ringed with offerings from locals begging his blessings.

Mahale Mountains National Park:
Like its northerly neighbour Gombe, Mahale Mountains National Park is home to some of the last remaining wild chimpanzees in Africa. Around 1,000 of these fascinating animals roam the isolated rainforest of Mahale, a chain of dramatic peaks draped in lush vegetation falling to Lake Tanganyika’s beaches far below. Visitors are led on guided walks in search of the chimpanzees, following clues such as the previous night’s nests, shadowy clumps high in the trees, or scraps of half-eaten fruit and fresh dung. Once found, the chimpanzees preen each other’s glossy coats in concentrated huddles, squabble noisily or bound effortlessly into the trees, swinging nonchalantly through the vines.

Rubondo Island National Park:
Rubondo Island is tucked into the corner of Lake Victoria, the world’s second largest lake, an inland sea sprawling between three countries. Rubondo provides protection for fish breeding grounds, while tilapia and the rapacious Nile perch, some weighing more than 100 kg, tempt recreational fishers with challenging sports fishing and world record catches. But Rubondo is more than a water wonderland. Deserted sandy beaches nestle against a cloak of virgin forest. Papyrus swamps host the secretive sitatunga, a shaggy aquatic antelope, and the dappled bushbuck.

Saadani National Park:
Saadani National Park is the perfect union of beach and bush. Located just 70 km north of Bagamoyo and immediately accessible by paved road from Dar es Salaam, Saadani has recently become a fully protected national park and is a popular day-trip from beach resorts scattered along Tanzania’s northern coast. The Wami River, which passes through Saadani National Park and empties into the Indian Ocean, hosts a large population of hippos, crocodiles, flamingos, and many large bird species. Elephants have been rumoured to be seen bathing and playing on Saadani’s beach, especially in the early hours of the morning.

Walking
Walking safaris offer the opportunity to step outside of man's technological cocoon, and experience the African wilderness as the very first humans did. One changes from being a passive observer on a vehicle to an active participant in the ecosystem, alert and vulnerable to a multitude of potentially lethal creatures that live and die by the "law of the jungle".
Walking safaris are only conducted by the most qualified and experienced guides. The focus of walking safaris is not dangerous game - in fact guides typically make a concerted effort to avoid any exposure to dangerous animals. Instead, walking safaris present the perfect opportunity to focus on smaller aspects of the ecosystem that are typically overlooked when searching for "big game" on safari game drive - your guide will explain the critical role of termites in sustaining the African bush, they will point out flowers and birds, and explain the medicinal and cultural significance of various tree and plant species. While specialized walking-only safaris do exist, most safari camps and lodges offer walking as an important supplement to safari game drives. Walking safaris are typically only permitted on private land outside National Parks.
Tanzania Walking Safaris
There is no better way to get up close and personal to the wild Africa than on a walking safari. Accompanied by an experienced guide, learn about the flora, fauna and all the other little things to make you understand the ways of the indigenous peoples that live and survive in the area. It is a great feeling to know that you are treading on the tracks of the wild animals that might have walked on the same path just minutes before you.
Wherever you desire, whether memorable holidays, safari, a trek the mountains, a languid quiet stay at one of the many finest beaches, explore the millions of wildlife experience, birdlife or escape to a remote and hidden or private place in Tanzania, the Tanzania Unique  Safaris & Travels is your answer!

Cultural Tourism
The idea behind cultural tourism in Tanzania is to give tourists and local communities an opportunity to interact, with particular emphasis on giving the tourists brief but valuable insights into the life-styles of some of Tanzania’s fascinating people, without too much negative impact. And at the same time to provide the communities themselves with a share of the monetary and material benefit that tourism brings.
The cultural programme allows local people such as Sukuma, the largest population tribe in Tanzania(15%) ,Maasai,Hadzabe,Datoga,Iraqw,Sambaa,Luguru,Nyamwezi and other to show tourists of their ways of life, including their homes, areas of work such as agriculture, farming, pastoralism, hunting and fishing.
Income from these cultural activities are used by the groups involved for particular development projects, such as the building of dispensaries or clinics, water supplies or cattle- dip facilities.

Lobo remains what it is now as it was when we visited the first time in 1982: animals walking in and out of the area in numbers, and ability to see untamed giraffes less than 5 meters from the balcony of your room.
